Rocky whistled the same song for sixteen years.
A cockatiel who learned one verse of a song I played in college and refused, for sixteen years, to learn a second one.
Rocky came into my life when I was nineteen and learning guitar in a dorm room. He learned the opening of one song — just the first four bars — and that was it. For sixteen years he whistled those four bars every morning.
He outlived three apartments, one marriage, and my entire twenties. He was the most consistent male figure in my life and I will say that publicly.
His name and a tiny feather are engraved on a keychain I carry everywhere. I still whistle his four bars back when I’m alone in the car.
